Eight Years After, Oso-Owutu Ebonyi Community Road Remains Abandoned, Despite N273.4 Million Allocation

The Oso-Owutu community 12 kilometres road in Ebonyi state has been abandoned, despite the allocation of the sum of N N273, 540,000 for the project in the 2020 national budget.

The road that was first awarded in 2012 connects Nguzu, Amiyi, Amaigbo, Owutu and Oso communities in the Afikpo South Local Government Area of Ebonyi state.

Although construction of the road was first awarded in 2012, work on it commenced in February 2013 by the Federal Ministry of Works.

Worse still, work on the road was abandoned between 2015 and July 2016, an action MAWA Foundation learned was due to poor funding from the federal government.

However, the road was re-captured in the 2016/2017 budget under the mid-term project of the federal government.

This is even as Mr. Anselm Osereimen, Chief Engineer, Unigoble Construction, a company that handles the project, as far back as 2017, said it will be completed in six months.

Three years after, the project is yet to be completed and has since remains abandoned.

In 2020, the project was captured in the budget while the sum of N273, 540,000 was allocated to it.

Tracka, a public accountability organization who visited the project site, said despite the allocation made to it, work has not commenced, while the project remains abandoned.

This is even as residents of the communities are mainly farmers who depend on the completion of the road for an access road that will enable them to bring out their farm produce to be sold to the public and make revenues.
