A Nigerian lawmaker, Mr. Abubakar Amuda-Kannike, may have been caught up in the act of diverting funds meant for public projects in his community.
Mr. Kannike, representing the people of Ilorin East/South Federal Constituency at the Federal House of Representatives had in 2017 nominated the construction of Public Toilets and Boreholes.
In a document seen by MAWA Foundation the sum of N40 million was set aside for the project.
Tracka, a Nigerian civic organization visited Gambari, a community the lawmaker said the project will be sited to inspect and ascertain the level of implementation.
During their visit, community residents told Tracka team, the project was not implemented and has since been abandoned.
The lawmaker after Tracka visit held a meeting with community residents and assured them of his determination to commence and complete the project.
Despite the promise by the lawmaker, the project has been left undone, with community residents complaining about the project abandonment.
Abata-Karuma community residents, who are also the major beneficiaries of the project, continue to recount the sufferings they go through because they lack water.
Mrs. Joy Akinde, a community resident said apart from the lack of water, they suffer terrible hygiene issues.
She pointed at the gutters around the community which were filled with dirt. She appealed to the lawmaker to ensure the project is implemented in order to reduce the sufferings residents go through.
Children in the community are dying of waterborne disease, a community resident who identified himself as Ayo said.
