Community Voice Project
Community Voice Project is designed to empower rural communities to have a strong and unified voice to demand accountability from the duty bearer (the government).
We came up with this initiative because we know, rural communities do not have a voice that holds leaders accountable. And, this makes it impossible for them to have a voice on critical issues affecting their communities. It also, takes away their participation in civic space. This has a network of community change agents, journalists, NGOs etc. The goal is to empower rural communities to build local voices that will hold authorities accountable.
This project runs under three major thematic areas:
Education: There are more than 25 million out of school children in need of help. We are working to ensure that every child gets a shot at elementary education in Nigeria.
Health: About six out of 10 Nigerians lack access to quality primary healthcare services, a situation that is worsening disease outbreaks. We are working to ensure that every Nigerian has access to quality healthcare delivery.
Public Accountability: For every N100 that goes into contract award in Nigeria, N65 is stolen through procurement fraud. We are working to ensure that citizens hold leaders accountable in the use of resources and statutory powers.
Climate Change/Bio-diversity: Flood and draught have sent millions of Nigerians into IDP camps. These devastating effects of climate change is at the nucleus of our advocacy.
This is a project supported by the Leveraging Transparency to Reduce Corruption Project (LTRC) Fund. LTRC is a global action-research initiative led by Results for Development’s Accountability and Citizen Engagement practice.
The Fund is part of LTRC Program to conduct research focusing on reducing corruption and abuse of public resources in revenues generated from natural resources.
In this project, MAWA-Foundation in partnership with the Result for Development (R4D) undertook an investigative reporting that uncovered corruption in Nigeria’s natural resource revenue, using the Niger Delta Development Commission NDDC as a case study.
