Despite N2 billion, Edo community school in deplorable condition

Despite the sum of N2 billion spent by the Edo State government on Basic Education, Apana community Secondary School is in a dilapidated condition.

The Edo State Government in her 2020 budget allocated the sum of N2, 000,000,000.00 to the Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation programme (Edo BEST) under the Ministry of Education.

This is an initiative the state claims allows for a free and compulsory education programme to provide every child of school age resident in Edo State, regardless of the state of origin, access to quality education from primary up to junior secondary school.

Worse still, despite the N2 billion state allocation, Apana secondary school, located at the Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State is in terrible condition.

This is even as Tracka, a public accountability organization that exposed the school, says it is the only one in the community.

The organization says the school lacks furniture and staff and has since appealed to Mr. Godwin Obaseki, the Edo state governor to help fix it to allow for quality education.

Edo state is not an exception, across the 36 states and Abuja, there are many communities in Nigeria without schools with some having terrible dilapidated ones.

In some of the communities, parents have known that the government has failed and cannot provide basic education to their children, contribute money and fund the schools, pay teachers and provide infrastructure to allow for the education of their children.

MAWA FOUNDATION could not immediately reach out to the Edo State Government for a response.
