Abaji Area Council women in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT-Abuja) have said the only way family planning and child spacing can be effective and achieved is when their husbands are educated about its importance.
The women who spoke during a training conducted by the MAWA Foundation to empower rural voices said many of the women cannot keep to the family planning because their husbands are not well educated to help them achieve child spacing.
The women appealed to those conducting family planning training and advocacy to provide majority of the training and awareness to their husbands. They pointed out that their husbands have major control over the family planning effectiveness, while women have little to do.
Some of the women that explained how vital their husband’s roles are in family planning, disclosed they do not have right over their bodies and cannot insist on the use of condoms or any contraceptives without their husband’s consent.
“Those who designed family planning interventions must understand that men are the major determinants in adhering to its acceptance and usage. For effective results, men must be enlightened to believe and support it”, Mary Ona said.
