A community hospital at Amafor-Ugbawka in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu state is in a deplorable condition even as the government spent N7.6 billion on health in two years 2019 and 2020.
The state in 2019 approved the sum of N1,965,631,000 for health. And, in 2020 allocated N5,710,000,000 to health, making an increase of 190.49%.
Despite the huge amount been expended on health by the Enugu State government, the people of Amafor-Ugbawka community can no longer access healthcare as the only hospital in the area has since collapsed.
The community residents who have no alternative and cannot afford other means of healthcare have continued to use the hospital despite its deplorable nature.
Tracka, a public accountability organization that exposed the deplorable nature of the hospital, has appealed to the Enugu State government to help fix the hospital.
Presenting the budget for the two years that amounted to N5,675,632,000, Mr. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi the state Governor argued that the fund is for the revival of health sector especially during the COVID-19 era.
Worse still, the state government huge spending on health is yet to reflect on Amafor-Ugbawka community hospital while the residents continue to suffer trying to access healthcare.
One of the major factors that affects healthcare intervention in Enugu state and other Nigerian communities is corruption.
The Enugu state government must immediately address the corruption that manifests in the administration of health sector intervention that is responsible for the collapsed health facilities that are found in all communities forcing residents to undergo predicament in search for medical care.
