The Gombe lawmaker and the Universal Basic Education Commission-UBEC in an act that appears to be a corrupt practice, have allegedly built a two classrooms block at the price of N18 million as a constituency project.
Mr. Karu Elisha, a federal lawmaker at the House of Representatives and UBEC carried out the project in Jongori Baule Tula Primary School at Kaltungo Local Government Area of Gombe state.
The federal government last year allocated the sum of N18 million for the project.
The contract was supervised by the UBEC Department of Physical Planning while Mind Toit Nigeria Limited served as a contractor for the project.
Tracka, a public accountability organization that visited the project site said it has been completed and put to use.
Checks by MAWA Foundation show that amount is enough to build 12 blocks of classrooms, hire teachers and pay their salaries for a year.
Worse still, the Gombe lawmaker and UBEC have allegedly used the fund to build only two classrooms block, an example of an act that has helped undermined Nigeria’s ability to provide better education and other rural facilities.
MAWA-Foundation could not immediately reach out to Elisha and UBEC for an official response.
