Shocking: Imo lawmaker says a single classroom block costs N14 million

Mr. Ikenna Elezieanya, a federal lawmaker from Imo State has said a single block of classroom costs the sum of N14 million.

The lawmaker had nominated the construction of a single block of classroom at Ndegwu community primary school in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State as part of his constituency project.

The Nigerian Government in the 2020 Zonal Intervention Project allocated the sum of N14 million to the project.

The project awarded to Bonita Bay Nigeria Limited, had Nigeria Press Council as a supervising agency.

Checks by MAWA Foundation show Nigeria Press Council has no track record in carrying out building construction.

And, it is not, however, clear why a construction of school classroom block will be awarded to an agency that has no such track records.

Tracka, a public accountability organization who was at the project site said the classroom block has since been completed and delivered.

Mr. Peter Alfred, a civil engineer,
told MAWA Foundation that amount is enough to construct four blocks of classrooms with furnished furniture.

Worse still, Imo lawmaker says a single block of classroom costs N14 million. A practice that has helped to undermine development in Nigeria through contract inflation.

MAWA Foundation could not immediately reach out to Elezieanya  and Press Council for a response.
