Five years after, Oyo lawmaker abandons N46 million constituency project despite fund release

Olusegun Odebunmi, a Nigerian lawmaker representing Ogo-Oluwa/Surulere Federal Constituency in Oyo state has abandoned N46 million constituency project meant for the construction of Dam.

Under the deal, Odebunmi in 2015 nominated the construction of a Dam at Oko community area of Surulere Local Government of Oyo state.

Five years after funds have been released, the project has remained abandoned and uncompleted.

Checks show two companies got the contract for the project. –Eurobel International Limited, which was in charge of the disembarkment, and Hamkool Global Services, that handled the electrification and mechanization part.

Although the project was nominated by the lawmaker, it was supervised by Ogun Osun River Basin Development Authority, OORBDA.

The agency, however, confirmed that a total of N42,000,989 has since been released for the project in 2015.

Mr. Adeola David, an Engineer handling the project told Premium Times in 2018 that it is near completion.

Two years after the promise, the Dam has been abandoned while grasses have taken over the project site.

Farmers in the community continue to recount how water from the abandoned Dam is destroying their farmlands and leading to their loss of crops and revenues.

Mr. Adeniran Oluwasakin, the chairman of Unity Farmers Association in Oko, said the abandoned Dam has led to the destruction of farmlands and crops in the area.

When contacted, Mr. Odebunmi, the lawmaker said the project has since been completed and blamed community residents for vandalizing some materials at the project.

When confronted with evidence of abandonment, he said completing a project is relative and promised to resume work on the project site.

When contacted, OORBDA the supervising agency for the project declined to make a comment.
