Mr. Uzoma Nkem-Abonta, a federal lawmaker from Abia State, in an act to deliberately deceive and misinform his people, has branded his name on a constituency project that was funded by the federal government.
Abonta had in 2021 nominated the provision of tricycles for Ukwa East/West federal constituency in Abia State, where he represents in the House of Representatives.
A project the Federal Government under the 2021 Zonal Intervention Project (ZIP) had since allocated the sum of N10 million for its execution.
Tracka, a public accountability organization that followed up on the Abia Lawmaker constituency project, exposed pictures of tricycles showing how he branded his name on them together with his picture.
The organization says only 19 tricycles were distributed to the beneficiaries.
The action of the Abia Lawmaker is an act that was deliberately carried out to misinform his constituents, for supposed selfish and political interests.
Constituency projects are nominated by the lawmakers for the needs of their constituents and recommended same to the executive during budgeting; this will help to improve the living condition of the people in their constituents through building local infrastructures.
However, Nigerian experience has shown that Lawmakers do not execute constituency projects as they appear in the national budget, and getting them to account for monies approved for such intervention is always difficult.
And, often, community residents are not aware such monies have been given to their representatives, and that makes accountability very difficult.
