Extra: Katsina lawmaker six classrooms cost N100 million

Mr. Hamza Dahaltu, a federal lawmaker from Katsina State and Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) have claimed six classrooms constructed as a constituency project costs the sum of N100 million.

The constituency project that will be sited at three communities in three local government areas is been supervised by the Department of Physical Planning of Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and was awarded to Madbak Nigeria Company Limited, a company registered in August 2017.

Dahaltu, the Katsina Lawmaker at the Federal House of Representatives had last year, nominated construction of one block of two classrooms with furniture in Batagarawa, Rimi, and Charanchi Federal Constituency of Katsina State as his constituency project.

A project he nominated using the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).

The federal government had since last year allocated the sum of N100 million to the project execution.

Tracka, a public accountability organisation that visited the projects says a block of 2 classrooms have been completed at Karare Tsagero communities in Rimi Local Government Areas of Katsina State

However, checks by MAWA FOUNDATION show that the Katsina Lawmaker and UBEC may have shortchanged the people. Mr. Isa Yusuf, a civil engineer who said he had built schools at Katsina, said that amount is enough to build and equip 10 classrooms at N10 million each and that includes labour and consultancy fees.

Worse still, the Katsina lawmaker and UBEC say a block of two classrooms costs N100 million.
