Despite N278 Billion FCT Budget, Abuja Community Drink Water Same Pond with Animals

Residents of Kanzo community in Kuje area council of Abuja, the Nigerian capital have continued to drink water from the same place with animals, despite the sum of N278 billion approved Federal Capital Territory 2020 budget, MAWA Foundation has learned.

The FCT had in its 2020 appropriation, set aside the sum of N160, 133,401,417 for capital expenditure. An amount Mr. Muhammad Bello, the FCT Minister said will be utilized on basic infrastructures.

Good as that sounds, the Kanzao community in Kuje Area Council of Abuja, continue to drink water with animals from the same pond, while the money set for the capital expenditure is not having any impact on the community.

Residents of the community while speaking to MAWA-Foundation said there is no water in the community while they have continued to drink water from the same pond with animals for decades.

Community key influencers who spoke to MAWA explained that water in the pond dries off during the dry season forcing residents to trek over 15 kilometres in search of water.

This is even as the residents told MAWA Foundation that politicians visit the community during elections and make promises on providing basic infrastructures.

Community residents say apart from water, they lack hospital and schools, while appealing to the authority to help provide infrastructure in the area.
