N100 million Katsina lawmaker constituency project abandoned

N100 million ICT center constituency project facilitated by Mr. Abubakar Abdullahi, a lawmaker from Katsina State has been abandoned.

Mr. Abdullahi, who represents the people of Katsina Central Senatorial District in the Senate, had in 2021, using the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) nominated the construction of ICT centers in some selected schools in Katsina Central Senatorial, Katsina State.

The project was awarded to Right Tract Consult Engineering Limited, under the supervision of the UBEC Physical Planning Department.

Although the Nigerian Government has since released funds for the project, Tracka, a public accountability organization team that monitored the project, say ICT construction work at the Are Primary school in Rimi Local Government Area of Katsina State has since been abandoned.

Constituency projects are nominated by the lawmakers for the needs of their constituents and recommended same to the executive during budgeting; this will help to improve the living condition of the people in their constituents through building local infrastructures.

However, Nigerian experience has shown that Lawmakers do not execute constituency projects as they appear in the national budget, and getting them to account for monies approved for such intervention is always difficult.

And, often, community residents are not aware such monies have been given to their representatives, and that makes accountability very difficult.

MAWA-Foundation could not immediately reach out to UBEC and the Katsina lawmaker for official responses.
